The Gathering of Leaders

Convening cross-sector leaders for bold dialogue and collaboration

New Profit’s annual Gathering of Leaders brings together visionary social entrepreneurs and their counterparts from other sectors for dialogue and collaboration on solving America’s biggest challenges.

Jim Shelton, former Deputy Secretary of Education, and Alexandra Bernadotte, Founder and CEO, Beyond 12 (New Profit Accelerator Program grantee) lead a discussion on race and the social innovation field at the 2015 Gathering of Leaders.

After the 2014 Gathering, New Profit Managing Partner Kim Syman launched a Fast Company Co.Exist series entitled “Seven Reasons for Social Innovation Optimism” about transformative new approaches to scaling social innovation.

In 2014, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Gathering and introduced a new "Bets" framework that explores bold leaps people and organizations are making towards transformative social impact.

America Forward, New Profit's policy arm and the nation's only platform for social entrepreneurs, was formally launched at the 2007 Gathering.

Without the Gathering's generation of America Forward, it's highly unlikely that the Social Innovation Fund legislation and a number of other bipartisan efforts that direct hundreds of millions of dollars would have come to existence.

Managing Partner, Field Leadership and Early Learning Fund

Over the last 10 years, the Gathering has not only helped drive a new agenda for the social innovation movement, but has also led to tangible action that has changed the face of philanthropy and social service.

The Gathering is the single biggest and highest quality set of individuals that one could interact with from an intellectual perspective, and from a partnership perspective. It's the cream of the crop of people in the social sector.
Vineet Singal, Co-Founder & CEO, CareMessage

At the 2015 Gathering, participants boldly addressed race and diversity and how they play out in the social sector and in society more broadly, and other issues including technology, inclusiveness, and social change.

John Rice, Founder & CEO, MLT; Maria Teresa Kumar, President & CEO, Voto Latino; and Allen Blue, Co-founder, LinkedIn discuss what it means to be on a path to opportunity in America today at the 2015 Gathering of Leaders.

One of the issues highlighted in New Profit Managing Director Kim Syman's Fast Company series about transformative impact (see below) is the power of data, which is exemplified by Family Independence Initiative, whose founder, Mauricio Lim Miller, is pictured above.

When you join New Profit, you're now immersed in a community and surrounded by leaders who are constantly asking themselves what does it mean to lead and scale an organization and drive maximum impact? This is unique; there are very few networks that I've encountered 25 years in this work that bring that ability.
-Richard Barth,
President, KIPP

The launch of America Forward and the persistent incorporation of policy perspectives in the Gathering helped social entrepreneurs shift from being resistant to work with government.

The idea of America Forward was sparked by David Gergen's call to action at the first Gathering of Leaders.
