Citizen Schools' mission is to help students develop the academic and leadership skills they need to do well in school, get into college, and become leaders in their careers and in their communities. Citizen Schools operates a national network of apprenticeship programs for youth at 24 school campus sites nationwide to connect middle school students with adult volunteers in hands-on learning.
- Grew revenue from $1.8 million in 1999 to $10.3 million in 2005, while expanding from 1 city in 1 state to 13 cities in 4 states.
- Bolstered its 8th Grade Academy (transition to a college-track high school) and Alumni Services, while remaining focused on program quality of its core apprenticeship-centered program.
- Increased public policy and field building activities, including a partnership in extended learning time in Massachusetts and sponsorship of the Re-Imagining After-School Conference held in Washington, DC.
- Recent independent evaluation found that Citizen Schools students significantly outperformed their peers on a number of school-related indicators. In addition, 98% of Citizen Schools 8th Grade Academy graduates were placed in college-track high schools.
- In conjunction with Lesley University, Citizen Schools graduated the first-ever cohort of the Master's in Education Program with a specialization in Out of School Time Education.

Citizen Schools looks forward to growing to scale with quality, focusing on smart growth in existing regions including MA, CA, TX, and NJ and select new regions, including North Carolina. By 2010, Citizen Schools envisions 100 campuses engaging up to 10,000 students annually.
