College Summit

mission
To increase the college enrollment rate of low-income students by equipping high schools and districts with the tools, training, and resources to ensure that all students graduate with a post-secondary plan.

model
College Summit builds the capacity of partner schools to help transition students to college by providing four basic tools: 1) a post-secondary planning course for seniors; 2) summer training for cohorts of influential students to help build a college-going culture; 3) professional development for educators on the college application process; and 4) data for school and district leadership to manage student progress and measure college enrollment rates.

growth
  • Increased number of lives touched (students served) by 10 percent from 5,564 in FY2006 to 6,214 in FY2007 despite a year-over-year decrease in annual cash received; the FY2007 decrease did not impact FY2007's operating expenses, and the organization expects to realize a 60 percent annual revenue increase and a doubling of students served in FY2008.
  • Hired former board chair as president to lead aggressive expansion plans, and hired a vice president of development to strengthen fundraising capabilities.
  • Launched New York as a seventh program site and secured 19 district-level partnerships in nine states.

impact
  • Based on the past two years of data, College Summit high schools are raising their school-wide college enrollment rates by more than 15 percent over their own baselines, while the national college-going rate for low-income students has increased by only four percent.
  • J.B. Schramm was honored as a 2008 United States Social Entrepreneur of the Year at the World Economic Forum, in recognition of College Summit's impact and leadership in the field and larger social entrepreneurship community.

looking ahead
By the end of 2012, College Summit plans to work with 10 percent of all low-income students in the nation.
