New Leaders For New Schools

mission
New Leaders for New Schools' mission is to promote high academic achievement for every child by attracting, preparing, and supporting the next generation of outstanding leaders for our nation's urban public schools. The New Leaders program is designed to effectively prepare and support school leaders who have an unyielding belief in the potential of all children to achieve academically, a record of success in leading adults, and demonstrated instructional knowledge.

growth
  • Grew revenue from 2004-2005 by 45% and lives touched by 54%, while also expanding initiatives to support existing principal leaders and launching new efforts to consult to districts on the topic of school leadership.
  • Trained 231 leaders during the past 5 years. These leaders are impacting the lives of more than 115,000 students in 6 cities; a 7th city, Milwaukee, was conditionally approved for launch in 2006-07 as a result of the 2005 city competition.
  • Received more than 5,000 applications since inception for 331 fellowships in its first 6 cohorts.
impact
  • Early evaluation results show that 75% of New Leaders principals who have led schools for at least 2 consecutive years achieved average gains by district of between 9 and 20 percentage points during the past 2 years.
  • New Leaders received Maryland Department of Education approval to become an accredited institution that can grant full principal certification to candidates who successfully complete its training, making the organization the first non-university principal certification institution in the country.

By Fall 2006, New Leaders expects to have in place 331 New Leaders impacting 165,500 students annually. New Leaders has launched a challenge fund to expand individual giving and is continuing with its successful city competition to select new sites.
