Teach For America

mission
Teach For America's mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting the nation's most promising future leaders in the effort. Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding college graduates who commit two years to teach in low-income urban and rural communities and become life-long advocates to expand opportunities for children.

  • Attracted more than 17,300 individual applications for the 2005 corps (a 29% increase over 2004) including 12% of the senior classes of Yale and Spelman, 11% of Dartmouth College, and 8% of Harvard's and Princeton's senior classes.
  • Trained largest incoming corps class to date, approximately 2,200, at 3 training institutes with 72% of members reporting that they strongly agreed or agreed that the training prepared them to be as effective as possible during their first year of teaching.

  • Teach For America supported its largest corps to date in 2005 with approximately 3,500 teachers in more than 1,000 schools in 22 regions nationwide; during the 2004-05 academic year, 72% of students led by Teach For America teachers made significant or solid gains in the classroom, an increase of 8 percentage points over the previous year.
  • Teach For America's 15th Anniversary summit for alumni, current corps members, and champions drew nearly 2,000 participants. During 2005, 153 alumni were school leaders and 3 held elected office; goals for 2010 include 600 alumni working as school leaders and 100 as elected officials.

looking ahead
In addition to opening 3 new sites in Connecticut, Hawaii, and Memphis in the 2006-07 academic year, Teach For America will hold 5 summer training institutes in 2006 (up from 3 in 2005) to accommodate its largest corps to date. By 2010, Teach For America plans to place 7,500 corps members in 33 regions, reaching 637,500 children annually.
