Creating Learning Environments to Unleash the Potential of All Students


Mission: ANet works with school leadership teams to build their ability to administer interim assessments aligned with state standards, getting an accurate, evolving picture of student progress and enabling teachers to do more real-time personalization of learning and teaching to support diverse learners and students in underserved communities.

Vision: ANet believes that every student deserves opportunity in life, and that educators who devote their professional lives to this goal deserve support. There are no silver bullets. All schools are different and need a tailored approach. But there's no reason to re-invent the wheel over and over: We should learn from each other.


Mission: Big Picture Learning specializes in intensive training and support to schools to implement student-centered, real-world connected learning. Big Picture Learning schools place students in “advisories” where students and an advisor support each student to identify their learning interests and drive their own learning through internship and project based learning. One of the early pioneers in personalized learning, BPL has developed their unique model over more than two decades.

Vision: Big Picture Learning’s (BPL) vision is to catalyze vital changes in K-Adult education by generating and sustaining innovative, personalized learning environments that work in tandem with the real world of their greater community

Branching Minds

Mission: Branching Minds is a web-app for teachers and parents to quickly identify students' cognitive and behavioral strengths, challenges and interests; find appropriate learning supports to overcome those challenges; and then monitor progress along the way.

Vision: Branching Minds empowers intervention teams and classroom teachers to figure out exactly what the root of a student's problem is, as well as precisely which support will meet that student's needs.


Mission: CAST is a nonprofit education R&D group best known for defining and promoting the innovative concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is a research-based framework for designing inclusive curriculum that is flexible and highly responsive to the needs of individual learners.

Vision: CAST is a multifaceted organization with a singular ambition: Bust the barriers to learning that millions of people experience every day.


Mission: City Connects works inside a school to build a network of support resources for students that teachers, school counselors and principals can draw on to address the in-school and out-of-school factors that could impact success and well-being. Their work spans academic, social/emotional/behavioral, health and family domains and bridges early intervention, prevention/enrichment and crisis support. For students with LD, this ensures they are connected to personalized services in addition to those laid out in a traditional IEP.

Vision: All children deserve a chance to learn, but many face obstacles too steep for them to climb alone. City Connects builds a network of support for students, their families, and the schools that serve them, improving outcomes now — and for years to come.


Mission: City Year works in partnership with schools and teachers, where AmeriCorps members serve to support students in 28 communities across the U.S. and in three international affiliates. By focusing on early-warning indicators (such as attendance, behavior, and course performance) and through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after-school programs, City Year aims to prepare students for college and their careers.

Vision: City Year believes education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. It is is wholly focused on fighting the national dropout crisis. It is committed to leveraging the talent, energy and idealism of corps members to serve as tutors, mentors and role models in schools to help students stay on track – and get back on track – to graduate.


Mission: Convergence is a national nonprofit that convenes leaders with diverse or conflicting views to build trust, identify solutions and form alliances for action on critical national issues. It achieves outcomes through structured, facilitated dialogue and long-term relationship building, shifting the focus from winning the debate to collectively seeking solutions.

Vision: Convergence believes that collaboration is essential because no one group or individual has all the answers or can solve complex social and public policy problems on their own; yet each has something valuable to add. It is the creative tension from the engagement of those who disagree (or those who may not disagree but see the world from very different perspectives, or operate from different business models and incentives), that can yield innovative and breakthrough solutions with the breadth of support necessary to cut through deadlock.


Mission: Eye to Eye is building a youth-powered movement to combat the prevailing stigmas attached to learning differences and to equip students to self-advocate. Eye to Eye pairs middle school students with LD with similarly identified college students in yearlong mentoring relationships focused on building self-esteem and self-advocacy skills.

Vision: Eye to Eye aims to help create a world in which people with LD / ADHD are fully accepted, valued, and respected—not just by society, but also by themselves—and live free from second thoughts or worry, ready, able, and eager to apply their unique strengths to whatever they encounter in life.


Mission: The University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning studies problems in education and builds tools for educators. Their “Possible Selves” tool focuses on supporting student motivation for learning. Using this tool, students set goals, create plans, and work toward their self-described desired future.

Vision: The University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning exists because of a belief in challenging the educational status quo in all of its work. It believes in thinking differently about solutions to educational challenges.


Mission: The Lawrence Acceleration Academies, consisting of a week of intensive learning during the February and April school vacations, operate in 31 schools across the Lawrence Public School District. The objectives of the Acceleration Academies are to: markedly improve student performance through highly targeted strategies; attract the highest quality teaching talent; and grow the number of students served in Lawrence.


Mission: Massachusetts Advocates for Children Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative (TLPI) works with schools to create trauma-sensitive environments by putting into place practices and policies that create safe schools. TLPI also advocates for state level laws, policies, and funding streams to enable trauma sensitive learning environments.

Vision: Massachusetts Advocates for Children is a private non-profit organization dedicated to being an independent and effective voice for children who face significant barriers to equal educational and life opportunities. MAC works to overcome these barriers by changing conditions for many children, while also helping one child at a time.


Mission: The MIT Media Lab is an interdisciplinary research lab that encourages the unconventional mixing and matching of seemingly disparate research topics. The Lifelong Kindergarten group develops new technologies and activities that engage people in creative learning experiences and engages a cohort of Ph.D. level learning fellows each year to incubate projects on creative learning.

Vision: The MIT Media Lab seeks to check traditional disciplines at the door by bringing together product designers, nanotechnologists, data-visualization experts, industry researchers, and pioneers of computer interfaces to invent—and reinvent—how humans experience, and can be aided by, technology.


Mission: New Classrooms focuses on enabling personalized learning by creating classrooms that accommodate self-paced learning and multiple-modes of engaging in learning . Currently focused on math, New Classrooms leverages sophisticated algorithms and in class technology to provide rigorous, tailored learning experiences.

Vision: New Classrooms imagines a world where personalized learning is just the way students learn — a world where every student attends a school that meets them where they are, adapts to the unique ways they learn, and develops habits for lifelong success.


Mission: New Teacher Center provides two year new teacher mentoring and coaching for new teachers to build excellent teaching skills and improve teacher retention. NTC also provides school leadership coaching to create teaching and learning conditions that allow teachers to thrive and veteran teacher training to help veteran teachers adapt to recent changes.

Vision: New Teacher Center believes in a better, more equitable world. A world where everyone – regardless of circumstance, class, creed or color – has the opportunity to learn and achieve their full potential. This belief is at the very heart of what New Teacher Center does, working to change the odds for students. To help put them on a path to becoming college ready. Career ready. Community ready. Mission: Peace First is committed to celebrate young people and their potential to create positive change around them. Its work is grounded in teaching young people the skills of peacemaking; empowering educators and parents to teach and model these skills and values; and creating social messages that raise expectations for young people to demonstrate compassion and empathy.

Vision: Peace First aims to unleash this untapped resource by teaching young people the skills they need to solve the problems that matter most to them, and investing in the ideas that will help change our world for the better.


Mission: PowerMyLearning partners with schools in high-poverty communities to enable teachers to team up with families and colleagues to provide personalized, integrated, and joyful learning experiences for students. PML provides a free online learning platform and coaching for teachers to implement personalized / blended learning in their classrooms.

Vision: PowerMyLearning strives for all children to be able to power their learning through a combination of technology and the people who matter most to their success – teachers and parents.


Mission: Teach for America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach for America enlists, develops, and mobilizes remarkable individuals who make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-need and become lifelong leaders in the effort to end educational inequity.

Vision: Teach for America enlist, develops, and mobilizes as many as possible of our nation’s most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence.


Mission: Transcend focuses on designing “school” for the 21st century learner and fundamentally transforming opportunities for students to engage in school. Transcend’s focus on redesign allows schools to shape their work for each student rather than around non-existent “average” learners.

Vision: Transcend envision better school models that prepares and inspires all students for long-term success through more personalized and flexible learning methods, students driving their own learning, interdisciplinary experiences, and deliberately diverse communities.


Mission: Turnaround provides wrap-around services to high-poverty schools to help students address the social-emotional and behavioral factors that can block learning. Turnaround provides research based tools and practices for schools and school districts to produce environments that accelerate healthy student development.

Vision: Turnaround believes in a new reality for public education, complete with engaged students, equipped educators, safe and supportive school cultures, and systemic impact related to the effects of adversity on learning.


Mission: The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence builds the social-emotional intelligence of the students and adults in schools to create a climate conducive to learning, health, and happiness. Yale works with schools to implement the RULER approach, an evidence-based socio-emotional development program.

Vision: The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence uses the power of emotions to create a healthier, and more equitable, productive, and compassionate society, today and for future generations by conducting research and designing educational approaches that support people of all ages in developing emotional intelligence and the skills to thrive and contribute to society.
