New Profit Invests $1 Million in Pivot Learning

Pivot Learning partners with educators in our nation’s most underserved schools to implement high-quality curriculum and aligned instruction, rooted in the science of reading

January 21, 2021

New Profit, a national venture philanthropy organization, announced that it will support Pivot Learning with $1 million in unrestricted funding and additional strategic support to help CEO Dr. Arun Ramanathan and his team expand the organization’s impact.

Pivot Learning believes that educational justice will only be achieved when all students are successful – including students of color, students from low-income communities, English learners, and students with disabilities. Pivot supports educators to improve teaching and learning by building strong instructional systems, deepening educators’ knowledge of evidence-based practices in English Language Arts and Math instruction, and applying effective practices in prevention and intervention. Pivot’s evidence-based approaches ensure that all students have every opportunity to learn.

Through its dynamic model, Pivot Learning works to drive significantly greater rigor in instruction in two areas:

  • Curriculum Implementation: Pivot collaborates with educators to adopt and implement high-quality instructional materials, and provides curriculum-specific professional development grounded in the science of reading that improves student outcomes—as validated by a recent third-party evaluation study.
  • Prevention and Intervention: Pivot’s team helps districts identify the key academic and social-emotional supports necessary for all students, especially those who have been historically underserved, to succeed academically. This includes implementing culturally-responsive and data-driven Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Pivot has emerged as one of a handful of organizations that is helping districts genuinely increase the quality and rigor of instruction for all students. Arun and his team have built a highly effective model, and we are excited to support them in expanding the reach and impact of their work over the next four years.

— Doug Borchard, New Profit Managing Partner

Since its founding in 1995, Pivot has established itself as an expert in district-level change while remaining entrepreneurial in its approach to designing customized solutions that help schools cater to the needs of their students. Last year, Pivot worked across 17 states with more than 90 district partners, serving 1.3 million students nationwide.

Our evidence-based approach enables educators to accelerate student learning, and New Profit’s support will grow our impact across the country.

— Dr. Arun Ramanathan, CEO of Pivot

Over the next four years, in addition to the unrestricted grant, New Profit will partner with Pivot Learning on leadership and board development, and strategic planning for growth and impact, among other areas.
