Healing Schools Project, part of New Profit’s Mental Health Equity Catalyze Cohort of Social Entrepreneurs, is dedicated to helping schools integrate anti-racist mental health and well-being practices to improve retention for teachers, especially teachers of color. They use evidence-based approaches that are tailored and culturally relevant through healing circles, trainings, and strategic planning so that teachers can thrive, grow, and support every student.

To help us get closer to Healing Schools Project’s work, Executive Director Wenimo Okoya shared details about her leadership style and her favorite part of her work. 

Q: What is the one thing you wish more people knew about the issue your organization is working to solve?

A: I wish more people knew that if we don’t center educators of color’s mental health, we cannot address the issues of educational inequity that exist in the system.

Q: What has been the most fulfilling part of the work that you do?

A: I love that I get to be part of creating a radically different space for educators in schools: One where they feel safe to be vulnerable and authentically connect.

Q: What would have to be true for the work that you do to not be needed?

A: Schools would have to be designed to center the wellbeing of educators of color. 

Q: How would you describe your leadership style?

A: My leadership style is collaborative and reciprocal. I learn so much from the people on my team and love knowing we are collectively working to achieve the same vision.
